2024 U.P. Student Constructor Awareness Night (SCAN)
SCAN is an annual event designed to expose students to the construction industry and the issues they face once employed. Participation from contractor and industry partner members allows for meaningful interaction between students and industry professionals. The 2024 event was held on October 22 in Houghton.
Students from Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan University visited two jobsites :
East Hall | GC-Walbridge East Hall provides housing for 512 students across 152 rooms. It is expected to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification for its sustainable design and construction, with the possibility of LEED Gold. Amenities include building-wide air conditioning, covered bike storage, and in-unit bathrooms. Construction began in Oct. 2023, with the hall expected to be ready for students to move in by the Fall 2025 semester. Recently, the project hit the 50 percent completion milestone.
Lambda Chi Alpha House | GC-Gundlach Champion The Lambda Chi Alpha, built in 1899, suffered extensive damage in an electrical fire in June of2022. Construction to restore the exterior of the property to is original state and modernize and upgrade to current building codes began Spring of 2024.
Afterwards, the students had the opportunity to discuss careers in construction with AGC Michigan members from Hardman Construction, Closner Construction, and Gundlach Champion, Inc., along with representatives from Mortensen, the Upper Peninsula Construction Council, and Upper Peninsula Michigan Works!.
